At the CfA, our primary research database is the Astrophysics Data System (ADS). Wolbach Library's Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) subscription allows us to leverage the strengths of ADS's physics and astrophysics content and Mendeley's institutional analytics in order to provide a more complete portfolio of the CfA's research activities.

Access it anywhere
Mendeley is composed of two key components: (1) a cross-platform desktop client and (2) a web application, which means that you can take your research with you wherever you go. You can have Mendeley Desktop installed on multiple computers, running different operating systems, and always have access to the same documents (remember, Mendeley Desktop is a free download). You can also access your library from the web, on a computer without a Mendeley Desktop installation (eg, a public library terminal). Since Mendeley synchronizes your library to Mendeley Web, this means that any computer you have access to the internet through, you should be able to access your library.

Run it on any machine
Mendeley is a cross-platform application (Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone) that helps researchers manage and annotate their scientific paper collections. Mendeley Desktop is available for all modern flavors of Mac, Windows and Linux. It is also available for iOS.

Use it to Collaborate
Researchers can also set up collaborative projects, work and discuss in groups, and share data on Mendeley's web platform.

Use it to Search and Discover
Mendeley users' research paper collections are anonymously pooled on the web platform, creating a crowdsourced research database with a unique layer of social information - each research paper is connected with socio-demographic information about its audience. This data is made available to the public via Mendeley's API, enabling research groups to build applications on top of it.

Use Mendeley Desktop to Organize Your Virtual Library and Publications

Use the Web application to collaborate with others online and access content

  • Social network of almost 2 million users
  • Searchable database of 250 million crowd-sourced documents, with real-time usage data
  • Personalized content recommendations

[Please note: Currently, CF-managed machines do not support Mendeley Desktop, but this issue should be resolved with the next upgrade due in 2-3 months. In the meantime, you may still maintain a Mendeley account with MIE Group membership and access that account through the Web (, and you may download and sync Mendeley Desktop on any non-CF-managed machine (]
